Did you see May Bugs flying around this year ?
May Bugs are beetles which are seen flying around for 6 weeks or so, they are quite big ( 30 – 50 mm long ) and bulky.
In my childhood one managed to get stuck in my mother’s hair, there was quite a commotion !.
The life cycle is a lengthy process. Eggs laid in grass, hatch and grow on for 3 – 4 years eating grass roots and developing into long juicy grubs called cockchaffers.
This winter Badgers have ripped up grass lawns to harvest these plump snacks, I’ve never seen anything like it.
Remaining larvae hatch into flying Beetles and the cycle continues.
