Autumn 2022 was a special time for the Emmaus Club as it celebrated its 21st Birthday.
Back in the mid 90s the Parish Council, the Rev. Alan Carr and others in the community worked together to start a weekly youth club in the Village Hall. Unfortunately it fizzled out after a few months. The Church then started up the Emmaus Club meeting monthly in the Hall, looking at the Bible, Youth issues and playing games.

After a couple of years the club then met fortnightly and included outdoor games and activities. In 2001 the Club began meeting weekly on a Friday evening. It has experienced ups and downs with numbers ranging from 30 plus to just 2 (we were once very close to closing), numbers now are around 15 – 20. I would like to thank all those who have helped out over the years, encouraged and prayed for the young people of the Parish. Also for Alex & Laura who attended weekly for 4 years and Callum Duncanson who has been a stalwart member, youth leader and adult helper. Here’s to the next 21 years ! Derek Shurvell.

Congratulations to Derek and Lindsay who have been given a Mid Sussex Applauds award for their work with the Emmaus Group! It’s well deserved and we’re all so pleased for you. 👏👏👏

Derek writes: On Palm Sunday Lindsay & I with 2 guests went to an Awards Tea at the Show Ground, organised by Mid – Sussex District Council.
We had been nominated for a “Community for all Award” by our Parish Council for running the Emmaus Youth Club.
As you can see from the photo above we were awarded the trophy & a certificate for this category.
Many thanks to our Parish council for nominating us and the accompanying submission, (read this 👇)

Lindsay & Derek Shurvell have played a crucial role in the enduring success of the Emmaus Youth Club in Sharpthorne & West Hoathly for over 22 years.
Their selfless dedication as volunteers has ensured the club not only remains operational but also offers relevant, engaging and enjoyable activities for its attendees.
Despite managing two businesses, Lindsay & Derek consistently introduce new initiatives to enrich the club’s offerings, demonstrating their unwavering commitment.
The Youth Club serves as a vital social hub for young people in the community, providing invaluable opportunities for social interaction and development.
Without it, the social growth of these young individuals would likely suffer.

We had a lovely tea too!
