The Church Extension
Read our latest news here February 2019 Work begins with an archaeological survey prior to the installation & connection of water services. Links to the plans are at the bottom of this page.
What is happening with the extension project?
Steady progress is being made towards our goal of providing our beautiful historic church with basic modern facilities. The existing vestry, itself a late 19th century ‘extension’, will be replaced by a two-storey extension providing one disabled and one further toilet, washing up facilities and a meeting room. Our application has been approved by The Parish Council and District Council.
What will the extension look like?
Great care has been taken with the design to ensure that the extension will be in keeping with the original architecture of the church. There is no incursion into the main body of the building , the ’footprint’ of the building does not extend beyond the existing building and will be clad in the same stone as the main church. The plans are on display at the back of the church and can be viewed online at MSDC online register at Mid Sussex District Council under the reference DM/15/4345.
How will this be funded?
In addition to the revenue from fund-raising events and the contributions pledged by St.Margaret’s PCC and the Churchyard Trust, applications will also be made to relevant grant funding bodies once all approvals are in place and once we can demonstrate that a significant proportion of funds has already been raised. There remains a funding ’gap’ for which we have launched our appeal to the wider community and any donors moved to help us.
How can you help?
We are delighted by the success of our fund-raising events so far and very grateful for the support of the community. The Slinfold Concert Band returned to delight their audience with a further selection of popular tunes, many from well-known shows. A varied programme of exciting community events has been well supported through 2016 including organ and harp recitals, a ‘from scratch’ performance of ‘Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat’, a flower arranging workshop, a barn dance and most recently a mediaeval banquet.
Details of forthcoming events will be posted on the Hoathly Hub and in the Chronicle.
We launched our appeal on Saturday 9th April 2016. Come along and see the plans which are now on view in church and help us to ‘raise the roof’ on our new extension so that our much-loved 11th century church can continue to hold its place in the heart of the community in the 21st century and beyond.
